The official program of the 80e anniversary of the Liberation of Strasbourg as announced by the authorities will begin at 9 a.m. at Place de la République with a speech by the mayor of Strasbourg Jeanne Barseghian, a laying of wreaths, without the President of the Republic but with the ministers Jean-Louis Thieriot and Patrick Hetzel, numerous officials and representatives of veterans' associations. It will continue from 10 a.m. at Place Broglie, with a show (190 French and German dancers) paying tribute to the 2e DB which liberated Strasbourg (a Sherman tank was installed near the Kufra oath monument).
Ceremony at Place Broglie and speech at Palais U
According to the prefecture, a thousand people are expected to attend the show. It will be followed from 11:30 a.m. by an official ceremony chaired by Emmanuel Macron with a review of the troops and Marseillaise.
At 12:30 p.m., the President of the Republic will deliver his only speech of the day in the aula of Palais U, where Franco-German school projects will be presented from 9 a.m. onwards. The speech, which according to the Élysée will address several themes including the 2e DB, the Army of Africa, the incorporation of force, the Alsatian resistance and Marc Bloch, will be followed by a decoration ceremony, one of the recipients of which is Daniel Bloch, the son of the historian and great resistance fighter. The President of the Bundesrat, Anke Rehlinger will be present at Place Broglie and at Palais U.
At the Struthof and the Alsace Moselle memorial
The day of commemoration will continue in the Bruche valley from 2:30 p.m. with a “memorial journey” at the Struthof, then Emmanuel Macron will preside over the rekindling of the flame of the monument to the heroes and martyrs of the deportation, in the presence of veterans and families of deportees. The only Nazi camp on French territory, located in Natzwiller, Struthof was discovered on November 25, 1944 by American soldiers.
The President of the Republic will then go from 3:45 p.m. to the Alsace Moselle memorial in Schirmeck.
