The president-elect of the United States will not receive a sentence in the Stormy Daniels case. The trial was postponed indefinitely by a New York judge.
Donald Trump escapes the worst. The president-elect, convicted in May in the Stormy Daniels affair, will not immediately receive his sentence. A New York State judge suspended the sentencing on Thursday, November 21, 2024, sine die, reports Libération. In addition, Judge Juan Merchan authorized the lawyers to present, by December 2, an appeal to obtain the annulment of the procedure and consequently suspend the pronouncement of the sentence.
On May 30, Donald Trump was found guilty by the courts of the State of New York of aggravated accounting falsification. He allegedly hid from the public the payment of $130,000 to porn actress Stormy Daniels in order to prevent her from discussing the sex scandal at the very end of his victorious campaign in 2016. However, this affair did not prevent him to run for president and emerge victorious.
He risked prison
Donald Trump is also targeted in other cases, notably for his involvement in the attack on the Capitol. However, of the four criminal proceedings targeting him, this Stormy Daniels case is the only one in which a trial was held. He risked a sentence which could range from a fine to prison.
With this decision to indefinitely postpone the sentencing, he sees his judicial horizon clearing up, before his return to power in January. The Manhattan prosecutor, Alvin Bragg, even mentioned freezing all prosecutions “until the end of the presidential term”, in comments reported by Libération.
