when the tallest woman in the world meets the smallest

On the occasion of its annual day, Guinness World Records organized the exceptional meeting between the tallest and the smallest woman in the world. Rumeysa Gelgi, a little over 2m15, and Jyoti Amge, 62.8 cm, met in London (England) on Thursday November 21, 2024 to drink tea and enjoy a pizza. An encounter immortalized by Guinness which lists the most unusual records around the world.

“Meeting Jyoti for the first time was wonderful. We have things in common! We both love makeup, self-care, jewelry and getting our nails done”said Rumeysa Gelgi. “It was sometimes difficult for us to make eye contact due to our height difference, but it was great”she enthused.

Rare genetic diseases

The 27-year-old young woman, from Turkey, was first recognized as the tallest teenager alive before earning the title of tallest woman on the planet in 2021. Suffering from Weaver syndrome, Rumeysa is the the only person to have been diagnosed with this very rare genetic disease in their country.

For her part, Jyoti Amge suffers from achondroplasia, a bone growth disorder that affects the arms and legs. This 30-year-old Indian woman is now a social media star. She also made her dream come true by starring in the cult series American Horror Story de Ryan Murphy. “There were a lot of difficulties, but it was the greatest achievement of my life”she admits. Her record was approved in 2011 and she has since traveled the world as a diversity ambassador.

They receive the title of icons

Guinness World Records also took advantage of the meeting between the two women to give them a special certificate, that of icon. This status recognizes the influence of Rumeysa and Jyoti in favor of inclusion and the fight against discrimination. “The Guinness World Records aims to celebrate differences”recalled Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of the famous book. Among the GWR icons, we find personalities who “have left a mark through their words, their actions and their exceptional achievements”like Robert Wadlow, the greatest man of all time.
