. At the congress of mayors, elected officials worried about the looming financial situation

In the as elsewhere, this 26e Congress will also be one of anger. Still the same concerns with the 5 billion euros in budget cuts in the operating costs of local authorities requested by the government.

500 participants are expected. The format remains the same, this edition being devoted to territorial engineering, with the first forum and dedicated village, organized by the AMF 42 with the Loire prefecture and the department.

“Mayors, trusted actors for the French? »

Various workshops will be offered throughout the day to elected officials. Workshop No. 1 has been adjusted, it sets the tone with a shocking title: “Mayors, more than ever, trusted actors for the French? “.

Frédéric Dabi, Director General IFOP (French Institute of Public Opinion), specialist in political sociology and analysis of electoral behavior, will address the degrees of satisfaction with mayors and the reason for this confidence. He will also talk about the evaluation of expectations regarding mayors and the state of mind of elected officials, sixteen months before the Municipal Elections.

“We don’t have any room for maneuver”

Another consequence: certain communities will postpone the vote on their budget. The president of AMF 42, also mayor of and president of Roannais agglomeration, testifies: “The community budget must be voted on before March 31. A large part of the municipalities therefore vote in March. But the largest municipalities proposed a budget at the end of the year to allow services to have a vision for the year to come. This time, in Roanne as in Roannais agglomeration, we are obliged to postpone this vote, we will not have sufficient elements.”

And to specify: “For the moment Roanne would be punctured by 2 million and the intercommunity by millions. It's huge. We do not have room for maneuver of this magnitude. We will simply vote for advances for operation.”

“We can’t see clearly enough at the moment”

Christophe Bazile, mayor of Montbrison and president of Loire Forez agglomeration, says the same thing: “For intermunicipality we will not vote on the budget in December but in March 2025. We cannot see clearly enough at the moment. We could be charged 1.3 million euros.”

Axel Dugua, mayor of Saint-Chamond, will vote on his budget next December. “We are working on a budget where we do not foresee any additional cuts,” he said. “I hope I’m not too optimistic!” “.

Saint-Etienne, for several years now, has voted on its budget in March “to have as many elements as possible and prepare a budget as accurately as possible”, explains the city's communications department.
