When will Delaware see its first snowfall of the season? Here’s what we know

The evening chills Delaware has felt over the last few days are a forebearer of winter.

While temperatures are dropping below freezing, it could be just a matter of time before the First State is covered in white.

Last year, Delaware broke a nearly two-year snow drought with measurable snow on Jan. 15, 2024. Before then, Delaware hadn’t had measurable snow since March 12, 2022.

So, when will it snow again in Delaware? With temperatures dipping around 32 degrees, it could happen at any time.

When is the average first snowfall in Delaware?

According to the Northeast Regional Climate Center, Wilmington’s average first snowfall date between 1991 and 2020 was Dec. 17. The earliest snowfall was Oct. 26, and the latest was Feb. 16.

The average date for Wilmington to receive an inch of show is Dec. 30.

How much show does Delaware receive?

Delaware’s annual average snowfall has ranged between 9 and 20 inches, according to the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies, which examined snowfall between 1991 and 2020.
