Canton of Uri – Heavy snowfall leads to traffic delays on the A2

Today, Thursday, November 21, 2024, there was heavy snowfall, particularly in the Uri Oberland. The Uri cantonal police therefore received many reports of vehicles getting stuck.

Shortly before 3 p.m., traffic on the A2 motorway heading south had to be stopped due to heavy snowfall and snow clearance work. Traffic has been flowing again on the A2 southbound since 5:40 p.m. The A2 heading north was open in winter driving conditions. The Uri cantonal roads are passable. From 7 p.m. the Meien – Färnigen section will be closed due to the risk of avalanches. A reassessment will take place tomorrow Friday at 8:00 a.m. Short-term traffic disruptions must be expected in the Uri Oberland.

The Office for National Roads Operation, the Cantonal Roads Operation Department, the Central Switzerland Traffic Management Center and the Uri Cantonal Police are deployed.

Note to road users

Some snowfall is expected again tomorrow Friday. Keep the following tips in mind when traveling by car:

  • Allow enough time for your journey.
  • Your winter tires should have at least 4 mm tread depth. Before you leave, check your tires, windshield washer fluid, and wiper blades.
  • Remove snow and ice from the entire vehicle.
  • Take emergency winter gear with you.
  • Drive slowly and avoid sudden steering movements
  • Maintain a large safe distance from the person driving in front

The Uri canton police wish you a safe and accident-free journey.
