A new volcanic eruption began late this Wednesday, November 20 in Iceland, near the town of Grindavik, several local media reported. This is the 7th eruption since December 2023.
The return of a wall of fire. A volcanic eruption has started in Iceland, on the Reykjanes peninsula, near the town of Grindavik, local media Mbl.is and Visir reported. According to these two sources, the eruption began to be observed shortly after 11 p.m. local time this Wednesday, November 20 (midnight this Thursday, November 21, Paris time).
Frequent eruptions since 2021
The town of Grindavik is being evacuated, the local police chief announced to Icelandic public television RUV.
Up to sixty people were in this locality accustomed to these evacuations: this is the 7th volcanic eruption since December 2023.
The Reykjanes Peninsula had not experienced an eruption for eight centuries until March 2021. Others took place in August 2022 as well as in July and December 2023. Volcanologists have warned that the seismic activity of the region had entered a new era.
The activity recorded in this peninsula testifies to the awakening, after 800 years, of a long fault allowing the rise of magma, volcanologists agree.
Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems, more than any other European country.
