First the winter roller hits the south, then the weather changes radically – meteorology

Deep Renate is already causing significant amounts of snow in . On Friday morning we have a blanket of snow that practically extends from to Munich.

Snow forecast for Thursday and Friday

  • 3 p.m., Thursday: The snowfall moves from France to southwest Germany and hits regions such as the Black Forest, the Swabian Alb and later the edge of the Alps. Between 10 and 20 centimeters of snow can fall in these regions within six hours. Traffic chaos is expected from Freiburg to Salzburg on Friday morning.
  • 5 p.m., Thursday: Snowfall reaches Ulm and Memmingen, while only a few snowflakes will fall in Stuttgart.
  • 7 p.m., Thursday: It’s snowing now from Freiburg to Munich. Permanent snowfall sets in in Upper Swabia and the Allgäu.
  • 9 p.m., Thursday: Passau and Salzburg also receive heavy snowfall. The entire edge of the Alps will be affected by intense snowfall.
  • 1 a.m., Friday: Snowfall shifts slightly to the south; Hardly any snow is expected north of the Danube. It continues to snow in cities like Freiburg, Ulm, Augsburg and Munich.
  • 4 a.m., Friday: Snowfall is easing on the Upper Rhine and in the Black Forest.
  • 7 a.m., Friday: The snowfall is retreating to the edge of the Alps and is easing in cities like Munich, Augsburg and Ulm.
  • 9 a.m., Friday: The snowfall has stopped completely, only isolated snow and sleet showers are now possible.

Amounts of snow in the regions

By Friday morning, 5 to 10 centimeters of snow is expected in Munich, more in the southern part of the city than in the northern part. 2 to 5 centimeters of snow is possible in Augsburg and Ulm. Memmingen could get 8 to 15 centimeters of snow, while Kempten could even get 10 to 20 centimeters.

Freiburg is expected to get 5 to 7 centimeters of snow, while Salzburg could see up to 5 centimeters. There will also be up to 5 centimeters of snow in Paris.

Half a meter of fresh snow expected in the Allgäu

The Black Forest and the Allgäu are particularly badly affected. At higher altitudes, up to 30 centimeters of fresh snow is possible in the Black Forest and up to half a meter in the Allgäu.

Thaw caused by coming hurricane

However, the winter fun is only short-lived. A huge hurricane off the British Isles brings warm air to Germany.

Temperatures of up to 15 degrees are expected in the Rhineland at the weekend. The snow will melt slowly but quickly by Monday at the latest. After that it will initially remain mild, even in the mountains the snow will clear.
