– Pension reform under the government of Élisabeth Borne in 2023 has led to numerous angry demonstrations throughout the country.

This is an important first legislative step for this flagship proposal from left-wing deputies: their text calling for reduce the retirement age from 64 to 62 obtained the approval of the Social Affairs Committee on Wednesday November 20. It was in fact approved by 35 votes (left and RN), against 16 from, unsurprisingly, the center and right. For the architects of this proposal, this first victory is encouraging for in fineobtain the repeal of the pension reform. Next step: the debate in the hemicycle November 28th.

Among the first to react, the LFI rapporteur of the text, Ugo Bernalicis, believes that the reform adopted in 2023 under the government of Élisabeth Borne was “democratically and socially unjust, and economically inefficient“. At the end of October, RN deputies tabled a similar proposal as part of their parliamentary niche, but the left did not support it. “It's the same as ours, and we are not sectarian», decides the deputy Thomas Ménage, not resentful.

“Irresponsible”, for the right and the center

The departure age is not the only element affected by this proposal, which also brings the contribution period of 43 to 42 years. These two components combined therefore amount to also repealing the reform carried out in 2013 by Marisol Touraine under Hollande's five-year term, notes Le Monde. Enough to embarrass the socialists, who despite everything approved the overall text. The amendment presented by the centrists of the Liberties, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group to preserve the Touraine reform was therefore rejected. Among those who opposed this proposal, some pointed out a “not serious” text or “irresponsible”. Renaissance MP Stéphanie Rist does not budge: “If this pension reform is repealed, they will certainly be able to leave at 60, but with a much lower pension.».
