SNCF strike: why are the railway unions calling for mobilization from Thursday?

Railway unions called a strike on Thursday, November 21. At issue: the dismantling of freight and the opening of TERs to competition, but also salary negotiations.

Only one train in four will run tomorrow towards Clermont-Ferrand (Puy-de-Dôme). The four SNCF unions call to stop work, Thursday November 21, 2024. The objective is to contest the announced dismantling of the freight subsidiary, as well as the opening to competition of regional lines. Behind the scenes, they seek to influence salary negotiations and make themselves heard.

There is this famous obligatory annual negotiation which creates a sort of tension. December became the high point of conflict at SNCF“, explains Gilles Dansart, rail specialist, referring to 2022, 2021 and 2019 in particular. In total, 1,400,000 strike days were accumulated in 30 years at the SNCF in December, ahead of the month of June (986,000) and the month of October (898,000).
