Euphoria is scheduled to resume production in January, but we still know very little about it. The actors involved, however, seem to have received individual confirmation about whether their characters are returning to the popular HBO drama or not, and that information is starting to leak out from various interviews.
In a red carpet interview at this past weekend’s Governors Awards, for instance, Storm Reid said she will not be coming back for the show’s long-awaited return. Reid played Gia, the younger sister of Rue (Zendaya), for the first two seasons of Euphoria.
“I’m very excited for season 3. Unfortunately, Gia’s not returning for the third season,” Reid told a Rotten Tomatoes interviewer on the red carpet. “But I’m so, so indebted to the cast and crew of that show, to HBO. Euphoria‘s a really special thing, and I’m so glad that’s a part of my legacy and that I was part of such a cultural phenomenon. I’m forever grateful, forever indebted, and I can’t wait to see what season 3 has in store.”

The news comes as a bit of a surprise, since HBO boss Casey Bloys previously said that season 3 would involve “the same core cast.” When Reid was asked about the current status of Euphoria back in March, she seemed to think she would still be involved, saying, “I do know if we do go back that I am sure we will continue to be authentic and represent the real world.”
But Bloys and Zendaya have also confirmed that season 3 will take a time jump forward and will no longer be set in high school, so it makes sense that some characters may have gone off on their own paths.
Meanwhile, Colman Domingo said in a new Variety cover story that he’s been told his character, Ali Muhammed, will return, but that is all he knows.
“Apparently I will be back for season 3,” Domingo told Variety. “I don’t know anything about the scripts. I don’t know anything about the production date.”
Domingo added, “allegedly — that’s a great word to use, ‘allegedly’ — Ali is back. From what I’ve heard.”
