The next SUVs and pickups from Jeep and Ram will be able to benefit from 800 kilometers of autonomy thanks to a new dedicated chassis, Stellantis, the parent company of the two automobile brands, said on Tuesday.
The “STLA Frame” platform was designed for large pickups and SUVs, key segments for the group in North America, where it was developed, and in the Middle East, in particular, Stellantis said in a press release.
It should arrive in the United States in the first half of 2025, where it will face the Tesla Cybertruck but also the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T, then in Europe with the group's American brands.
To reassure the most demanding motorists, it promises a range in the 100% electric version of up to 800 kilometers, with enormous batteries ranging from 159 to more than 200 kilowatt hours, or four times more than for a small Citroën C3.
The platform's 800-volt architecture should allow it to recharge 100 miles (160 kilometers) in 10 minutes. It also promises to tow up to 6.3 tonnes, carry a payload of 1.2 tonnes, or ford in 61 centimeters of water.
While many motorists are hesitant to go electric, “we offer uncompromising solutions to customers who may be hesitant to try their first electric vehicle,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares.
Stellantis also promises an additional version with an economy extender – a technology popular in China but new in America, with a thermal engine that recharges the battery – which displays up to 1,100 kilometers of autonomy.
STLA Frame remains a multi-energy platform: it will also be able to accommodate internal combustion, hybrid and hydrogen propulsion systems “in the future”, specifies Stellantis.
The group launched the first models based on its STLA Medium platform in 2024, the new Peugeot 3008 and Opel Grandland, and will follow up with a Citroën SUV in 2025.
The STLA Large platform equips the powerful Dodge Charger Daytona and Jeep Wagoneer S in the United States. The chassis for small city cars is now missing.
The group still plans to achieve 100% electric sales in Europe in 2030 for passenger cars, even if the market is slipping, and 50% in the United States.
