Every winter, millions of French people hope to see snow fall. They dream of spending the Christmas holidays seeing through the window the snowflakes forming a thick white layer on the ground and on the trees. Will the winter weather live up to expectations?

With climate change and its consequences, we are gradually mourning the loss of snow. And this, all over the world. So, in October, for the first time, Mount Fuji appeared without its beautiful white color. No offense to climate skeptics, this disruption is a reality. However, this does not necessarily mean that there will be a lack of snow. Sometimes it's even the opposite.

Weather: what is climate change?

Climate disruption refers to significant and lasting changes in temperatures and weather conditions globally. If the weather changes, it is mainly due to human activity. Its causes come from greenhouse gas emissions which come from fossil combustion, deforestation and certain agricultural practices.

Consequently, we note an increase in average temperatures, the melting of glaciers or even sea level rise. The impact on biodiversity, food security and human health is already being felt.

Weather: snow this winter in ? Meteorologists reveal the predicted scenario

We no longer use the term global warming because it can be misleading. This does not mean, in fact, that winters will never be cold again. The weather, on the other hand, may have some surprises in store for us. Like a snowy episode in November.

Weather: vigilance is required for 30 departments

In a bulletin from Wednesday, November 19 at 11 a.m., Météo-France places 30 departments on orange alert for snow and ice (2 on Wednesday, 28 on Thursday). These forecasts are the consequence of the Caetano depression, which is expected to cross the country from West to East. However, the exact trajectory of this disturbance remains to be refinedwhich complicates the precise assessment of the most affected areas.

According to Météo-France, snowfall is expected over a wide geographical area, going from and to Franche-Comté and the Alps. Accumulations could reach several centimeters.

François Gourand, forecaster at Météo-France, specifies that he does not yet know the extent of the phenomenon. On the other hand, you should expect to see the streets wearing a relatively thick white coat (up to five centimeters).

Uncertainties and recommendations

The exact position of the snow band remains dependent on the final trajectory of the Caetano depression. Météo-France emphasizes that this uncertainty complicates the precise location of snowfall.

In addition, the ability of snow to hold on the ground will closely depend on temperatures. According to Yann Amice, meteorologist at Weather & Co, ground temperatures should oscillate between 0°C and 2°Cwhich could limit lasting accumulation in the plains.

What to do, then, if you live in departments where snow will fall. First, limit your non-essential travel. Afterwards, keep informed via Météo-France bulletins regarding developments. For motorists, it is essential to prepare vehicles (winter tires, etc.).

This cloudy episode then marks the start of the winter season. A season that we almost end up forgetting, as the weather is still pleasant, especially in the south of France. So don't forget to take care of yourself. Indeed, every year, snowfall, unfortunately, is the cause of accidents.
