After an unsuccessful attempt by the National Rally at the end of October, La France insoumise in turn presents a bill “to repeal retirement at 64”, reports BFMTV, Wednesday November 20. This was approved by the Social Affairs Committee and will therefore be debated in the hemicycle.
A divisive reform back on the benches of the National Assembly. As reported by BFMTV, the deputies of La France insoumise (LFI) will table a bill on Wednesday November 20 aimed at repealing the pension reform. The text was approved by the deputies in the Social Affairs Committee and will therefore be proposed to the hemicycle on Thursday, November 28. In total, 35 deputies on the committee approved the text, 16 opposed it, all from the center and the right.
After the failure, at the end of October, of a previous similar attempt from the ranks of the National Rally (RN), the proposed law “to repeal retirement at 64” undoubtedly has a greater chance of succeeding. And for good reason, it should be approved by all the left-wing forces but also by the far-right party. “We will vote for“, assured the deputy RN Thomas Ménage, Tuesday November 19.
What strategy for the government coalition?
In its text, LFI intends to raise the retirement age from 64 to 62 years, as was already the case before the reform adopted in March 2023 under the government of Élisabeth Borne, and reduce the contribution period necessary to retire from 43 to 42 years. This modification amounts to repealing the Touraine reform, passed in 2013 during François Hollande's five-year term.
For its part, the government coalition is seeking to refine its strategy to counter the text supported by LFI. “Some MPs plead not to go to the vote“in session, defending hundreds of amendments, but that is”dangerous in terms of image“, estimates a deputy from the “common base”. Others believe that it is preferable to let the Assembly approve the text before the Senate rejects it. In this hypothesis, they are counting on a joint joint commission bringing together senators and MEPs to bury the proposal.
