Snow roller is rolling over Germany! Where half a meter of fresh snow awaits us – meteorology

Intensive snowfall begins in Baden-Württemberg on Thursday afternoon and this time the snow stays put. The Black Forest and the Swabian Alb are particularly affected.

But the snowfall also reaches cities like Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Konstanz and Ulm, almost the entire state. A few snowflakes could even fall in the southern Palatinate Forest and in Frankfurt am Main.

Up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow is possible in the Black Forest, and around 5 centimeters in the lowlands. Up to 10 centimeters of fresh snow can accumulate in Upper Swabia.

Snowfall is shifting to Bavaria

From Thursday to Friday the snowfall will move further into Bavaria and particularly affect the Allgäu. The forecasts vary between 20 centimeters of fresh snow in the valley and up to half a meter at higher altitudes.

Cities such as Augsburg, Munich, Passau, Ingolstadt and Regensburg are affected by the snow front, with the amount of snow decreasing towards the north. Light snowfall may occur north of the Danube, while snow amounts of up to 10 centimeters are possible in the greater Munich area.

Traffic chaos on Friday morning

There could be significant traffic disruptions in southern Germany on Friday morning as the masses of snow could cause traffic chaos. But the rest of the country is not spared either: heavy snow showers can also create a blanket of snow locally.

Temperature jump by 20 degrees

Thursday and especially Friday will remain wintry and snowy in southern Germany. But a change in the weather is already in sight this weekend. Warm desert air is drawn from North Africa to Germany and drives away the cold polar air. At altitude, a temperature increase of up to 20 degrees is possible.

Hurricane off Ireland’s coast causes weather change

A dangerous hurricane off the coast of Ireland is responsible for this change in the weather. This hurricane brings wind speeds of up to 180 km/h, but fortunately does not hit Germany. Nevertheless, it draws enough hot desert air into Europe to cause temperatures to rise sharply.

However, it may take some time for this warm high-altitude air to completely displace the ground-level cold air in the south. The result is a paradoxical weather situation: snow in the south and mild temperatures of up to 15 degrees in the Rhineland.
