Thunderclap in Saint-Josse: the results of local elections canceled due to irregularities

Sasis last October by Ecolo, the PS and Team Fouad Ahidar, the jurisdictional college of the Brussels parliament delivered its verdict this Tuesday morning. Its members invalidate the results of the municipal elections in Saint-Josse and decide in favor of a new ballot in the small Brussels commune led by Emir Kir (Independent, ex-PS) within 60 days. The regional body has in fact noted a series of irregularities in the management of powers of attorney. And this in proportions significant enough to impact the distribution of seats on the municipal council.

With 54 votes, Team Fouad Ahidar could have elected a municipal councilor. At 127 and 247 votes, Ecolo and the PS could have obtained one more. For the three parties which contested the proper conduct of the vote, Emir Kir or at least members of his list clearly bear responsibility for these irregularities. The judicial body does not comment on this point, but nevertheless points to suspicious powers of attorney signed by the former federal deputy. As a reminder, last October the latter won an absolute majority with 17 seats on the municipal council, compared to notably 6 for the PS and 4 for Ecolo-Groen.

“There was clearly a denial of democracy in the last election. I am happy and satisfied with the decision this Tuesday morning. You should know that with 54 votes, we would have obtained a first seat on the municipal council. The day after October 13, I looked at the votes and quickly noticed problems. If Emir Kir himself is responsible? In any case, it’s at least people on his list,” says Ibrahim Dankus (Team Fouad Ahidar). “Ecolo has been saying for 20 years that Emir Kir cheats and I am therefore satisfied that a judicial body confirms this type of practice,” says Ahmed Mouhssin (Ecolo). It should be noted that Emir Kir, who could not currently be reached for comment, can still appeal the decision.

The secretary of the jurisdictional college, Laurent Blasson, for his part, mentions 116 clearly problematic proxies and 243 others over which there is doubt: “Of these 116 proxies, there are 66 unsigned and 50 signed the same day by the mayor, which raises questions. A proxy, to be valid, must in fact be filed no later than the day before the election. And then there are 243 proxies for travel reasons which are suspicious, for example often with the same handwriting. These were also signed by the mayor. » The annulment of the result of a local election is exceptional. The last identical decision concerns the local elections in Molenbeek in 2000.
