As we head into the winter months, frostbite becomes an increasing concern, especially for those who are in colder regions of the country. What you may not realize is that frostbite can form in just minutes if the conditions are cold enough.

Frostbite is the freezing of skin and tissue just beneath it. Areas most susceptible are fingers, toes, the nose and ears, where blood circulation may be limited. If these areas become numb and pale, that is a warning sign that frostbite could be setting in.

In January, the temperature at the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Miami Dolphins NFL playoff game was one of the coldest in league history. Multiple people got frostbite after braving temperatures that dropped to nearly minus 10 degrees and a wind chill of around minus 30.

Frostbite cannot occur if temperatures are above freezing, even if the winds blowing are making the temperatures “feel” like it is below freezing. However, hypothermia is a real threat, even with temperatures above freezing.
