A serious accident on the Val Thorens estate (Savoie). Early in the morning, Tuesday, November 19, a ski lift cabin, the largest, crashed upon arrival at the Cime Caron station, according to information from Dauphiné Libéré. Nearly twenty people were affected by the accident. Four were slightly injured. Several people were seriously injured, some of whom are in “absolute emergency“. Their vital prognosis is not engaged.
The accident occurred in very difficult weather conditions at more than 3,000 meters above sea level, according to a press release from the Savoie prefecture. The cable car cabin was used as part of an ongoing construction site and carried sixteen workers when it struck the arrival station.
An activated crisis unit
A rescue operation was set up by the CRS Alpes, supported by the Savoie firefighters. The emergency services prepared to receive the injured. But bad weather makes their action difficult. Several stretchers were transported. Two helicopters were deployed to rescue the injured, reports the local newspaper. Some victims were evacuated by a cable car which takes them to the 3 Vallées area. Orelle elected officials were mobilized to facilitate the evacuation of the injured. After the accident, the Savoie prefecture activated a crisis unit. The Val Thorens ski area is due to reopen on the weekend of November 23 and 24.
