The calm autumn weather says goodbye. Winter is coming to Hesse and large parts of Germany. Expert Dominik Jung expects a “radical change in the weather”.
Fulda/Wiesbaden – One of the longest high-pressure weather conditions of the year is coming to an end. “We have had stable weather in Germany for several days and weeks. There will be a big change in the weather next week. “It’s going to be really turbulent,” explains meteorologist Dominik Jung from Q.met.
Snow on the way in Hesse: Meteorologist sees “radical change in weather”
After a lot of fog, some rain, but overall calm weather, lows will reach Germany in the coming week. They bring a lot of wind and polar air masses with them. “These ensure that the snowfall line drops significantly and snowfall can occur at medium and higher altitudes in the next week,” says Jung. Hurricane gusts and winter thunderstorms are also possible.
The first snowflakes of the new winter season are expected down to the lowlands on Thursday evening (November 21st) and Friday (November 22nd). At high altitudes it becomes white beforehand. There is a risk of slippery roads on the roads, especially in the low mountain ranges. “It is now high time for winter tires,” emphasizes meteorologist Jung.
Weather expert Oliver Reuter from East Hesse had also recently stated that he was expecting significant snowfall in the Rhön in the coming week. It was already wintery on the Brocken in the Harz on Wednesday of this week.
The question is: How much snow is really coming? And where? A US weather model expects four to seven centimeters for East Hesse. The European model ECMWF sees the focus in the east and south of Germany – with 40 to 50 centimeters of snow in some places. That would be an extremely strong onset of winter. The Rhön is likely to turn white in any case.
“After the short winter greeting next week, it could quickly become milder again,” expects Dominik Jung. Peak values of more than 10 degrees or more would then be possible again. “So it really seems like it will only be a short winter appearance,” says Jung. In the last week of November it could be significantly too warm for the time of year.
Before low air pressure brings storms and snow, there will initially be fog, clouds and at times rain in Hesse. The German Weather Service (DWD) expects clouds and high fog on Friday (November 15th) before it clears up during the day. It should stay mostly dry with temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Frost is possible in some areas on Saturday night with temperatures between 3 and minus 1 degrees.
Will winter only have a short debut?
Saturday (November 16th) also starts with clouds and fog. It stays overcast most of the time, but the sun occasionally comes through with maximum temperatures between 6 and 8 degrees. Frost is also possible on Sunday night. According to the DWD, it will remain overcast on Sunday (November 17th). Shower-like rain is possible at times.
