The Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Wellington Dias, was appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to represent Brazil on the board of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.
Dias’ portfolio is responsible for the Lula government’s social programs, such as Bolsa Família.
The Alliance was launched this Monday (18) during the G20 summit, taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
In total, the Alliance currently has 148 founding members, including, in addition to countries, international organizations, international financial institutions and philanthropic and non-governmental organizations.
The initiative aims to accelerate global efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, the first two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stipulated by the United Nations to be achieved by 2030.
