It may not have the lure of a high profile tournament such as the European Championship but UEFA’s vision with the creation of the Nations League has been widely lauded by many as an ideal replacement for the many low profile friendly games that dominated previous international windows.
After Tuesday night’s games, many sides across the various ‘Leagues’ have been relegated or promoted and/or will face relegation/promotion playoffs next March.
For teams participating at the top table of the competition, League A, the eight teams that advanced which include group winners: Spain, Germany, France and Portugal will face the four runners-up in: Italy, Netherlands, Croatia and Denmark with the draw set to take place next Friday (22 November) in Nyon.
The group winners will play the second game of the home/away match-up at home with teams not able to be drawn against teams from their same Nations League group (for example, Portugal cannot face Croatia).
The quarterfinals of the Nations League will be played on March 20 and 23 next year with the teams that progress set to qualify for the Final Four with these final games set to be staged in one of the four participating nations. Spain are the current holders having beaten Croatia in 2023 after a penalty shoot-out in Rotterdam with Luis de la Fuente’s men strongly fancied to retain their crown.
