For all of you who missed ‘Joker 2: Folie à Deux’ in theaters (most of you, according to its disastrous box office numbers), we have some good news. Or bad, depending on how you look at it. Because the movie already has a release date on digital platforms, and it was so poorly received that we don’t know how to categorize the possibility of seeing it. The movie will be released on Max on December 13 and will arrive just in time to be the talk of Christmas dinners.
Released last October 4, ‘Joker 2: Folie à Deux’ has been scalded by its theatrical release and has not even needed two months to be confined to digital platforms. If the first film won the Golden Lion in Venice and was nominated for an Oscar (how many films based on comic books can say that?), this sequel has been called the worst film ever according to its own actors.
So… is it really that bad? Much of the audience’s anger is due to the controversial ending (here’s its explanation and significance), and the fact that it wasn’t what many were expecting. Is that really the film’s fault? Because maybe if you think ‘Joker 2: Folie à Deux’ is bad, it’s only because you didn’t understand it. Even Quentin Tarantino has come out in defense of the film, laughing at the “comic book geeks” who criticize it.
In any case, and premiering in Max, you have it very easy. Give it a chance, make up your own mind, and if you don’t like it, try ‘The Penguin’, the Colin Farrell miniseries. It’s the best thing the platform has done in years.
