Moroccan citizen Rachid Harchaoui and his German wife were found in good health on Monday after being stranded by heavy snowfall in a difficult-to-access mountainous area between the provinces of Tinghir and Azilal.
The couple had been missing since Friday evening while participating in an excursion in the mountainous region between M’semrir and Zaouiat Ahansal, which required an urgent intervention by the Moroccan authorities and the mobilization of rescue teams, with the help from friends of the missing.
According to local sources, the rescue operation was carried out thanks to a Royal Gendarmerie helicopter, which transported the couple to the town of Azilal to receive the necessary care. The couple had been immobilized by heavy snowfall, preventing them from continuing their journey or turning around.
As soon as the report of their disappearance was received, elements of the Royal Gendarmerie and the local authorities of the provinces concerned launched intense search operations, despite particularly difficult weather conditions, marked by heavy snowfall and rain.
In addition, the incident was closely monitored by the governor of the province in coordination with the central services of the Ministry of the Interior, the Royal Gendarmerie and several other agencies. Firm instructions had been given to mobilize all the human and logistical resources necessary for their search.
It should be remembered that this region, renowned for its strikingly beautiful natural landscapes, is also known for its steep terrain, making hiking particularly arduous, especially during periods of unfavorable weather conditions.
This incident once again highlights the importance of caution and preparation when exploring the mountains, particularly in winter, where climatic hazards can be unpredictable and dangerous.
