A year 2024 with more adversity

How can we explain such a turnaround? All in all, a fairly standard answer: the level of the opponents was much higher. Indeed, Belgium faced England, Italy twice and France three times, six matches against teams in the top 10 of the UEFA rankings. In 2023, this has not happened once, with Germany in 11th place in this ranking. In these clashes against big European teams, Domenico Tedesco’s Belgium collected two points out of 18 possible. It’s not much. Too little.
Tedesco’s laboratory
No less than six tactical schemes used, 53 different players selected in two years, and no basic eleven defined, it is difficult to see a precise game plan in Tedesco’s strategy. The post-Golden Generation gives the impression of an experimental laboratory, in which the Italian-German coach is still looking for the miracle recipe.
If the Italian-German weathered the headwinds of a tougher 2024, he also proved that he could get the best out of his players in more advantageous conditions… against weaker opponents. It remains to be seen whether the Belgian Union will offer him the time and means to transform his experiments into a coherent team.
