BRASILIA – Federal deputy Marcel van Hattem (Novo-RS) wants to summon the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, to explain the diplomatic impact of the offense launched by First Lady Rosângela da Silva, known as Janja, against the businessman and owner of X (formerly Twitter) Elon Musk.
The episode took place during a parallel panel at the G20, an event taking place in Rio de Janeiro and which brings together, this Monday (18) and Tuesday (19), global leaders.
On Saturday (16), during Cria G20, a G20 Social panel, Janja used the microphone to curse Musk. “Fuck you, Elon Musk,” said the first lady, in English, in a debate about fake news.
The situation has generated a series of criticisms, especially due to the diplomatic shock that it could generate for the Brazilian government – Musk will assume a high-ranking position in the government of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who will take office on January 20th.
Hours later, without mentioning the first lady, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) declared that “it is not necessary to offend or curse anyone” during the Global Alliance Against Hunger campaign. Behind the scenes, the gesture was seen as a reprimand and attempt to contain damage.
Van Hattem saw Janja’s speech as “irresponsible” and stressed that, “considering that Elon Musk was chosen to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, his relationship with Brazil could be influenced by statements of this nature”.
The deputy said it is “imperative” that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarify what measures are being taken to mitigate possible damage to the diplomatic relationship between the two countries, due to the “relevance of bilateral relations between Brazil and the United States”.
“It is necessary to evaluate how statements made by representatives of the Brazilian government, even if on a personal basis, can be perceived and impact international cooperation, especially on strategic and economic issues”, he added.
The document was sent to the Chamber’s National Relations and Defense Committee. If the minister is summoned, he will be obliged to appear. But, for this to happen, the application needs to be approved in a vote that is not yet scheduled to take place.
