Ukraine authorized to strike Russia with American missiles: Italy refuses to do the same

Unlike the United States, Italy will not authorize Ukraine to use the weapons it supplies on Russian soil. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed this Monday in Brussels Italy's position on the arms supplied to Ukraine. “Our position on the use of weapons by Ukraine does not change, they can only be used inside Ukrainian territory,” declared the minister on the sidelines of a meeting of the heads of diplomacy of the EU.

This update comes as Washington has just authorized Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range missiles provided by the United States, according to an American official, a major strategic change a few weeks before the arrival in power of Donald Trump.

These missiles with a maximum range of several hundred kilometers would allow Ukraine to reach logistical sites of the Russian army and airfields from which its bombers take off.

For its part, has not closed the door: the use of its missiles on Russian soil remains an “option”, indicated the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, upon his arrival in Brussels.

Mr. Tajani also declared himself “in favor of a peace conference in the presence of the Russians, the Chinese, the Indians and the Brazilians”. “I hope that Beijing can play a positive role in making Moscow understand that we must stop this senseless war,” he added, while “the presence of North Korean soldiers is not a good signal” , he estimated.

In the morning, this Monday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskov estimated that if Washington's decision was confirmed, it was likely to “pour fuel on the fire” in the conflict in Ukraine, which has reached Saturday the 1000 day mark.
