The winter jackets can be unpacked this week: the temperatures will start to plummet from Tuesday. Meteorologist Peter Wick tells 20 Minutes in which regions even snow can be expected.
With the low temperatures it will snow in several parts of Switzerland. The Federal Meteorological Office predicts up to 80 centimeters of fresh snow in the mountains by Thursday morning. Up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow is also expected in the lowlands.
“Responsible for this is a cold front that will bring cold and moist polar air to us from Tuesday to Wednesday,” says meteorologist Peter Wick to 20 Minutes.
He predicts that the weather will still be changeable on Wednesday. On Thursday the front will arrive during the day. “In the Central Plateau, especially in eastern Switzerland, there will be up to 20 centimeters of fresh snow,” he says. There will be comparatively less snow in western Switzerland. Around 15 centimeters of fresh snow is forecast in Bern.
There will be even less snow in the Geneva region: “In Geneva it will probably also be white, but significantly less,” said the meteorologist. He suspects the snow will ease on Friday and the weather will stay dry for longer.
The federal government is also issuing a weather warning due to a moderate to significant risk of snow. The warnings mainly affect the foothills of the Alps and the entire canton of Valais.
The federal government recommends checking the car for winter suitability. “It’s definitely high time to put the winter tires on,” says Wick. Anyone who is still driving with summer tires runs the risk of skidding on icy roads.
