Meteoschweiz will close the comment option on its blog articles from November 30th. According to the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology, the reasons are the increasingly negative tone and austerity measures.

(Keystone-SDA) Meteoschweiz regularly publishes articles about weather and climate on the blog. In the past two years, 30,000 comments have been left on the articles, Meteoschweiz reported in its blog on Monday. Of these, the state weather and climate service had to reject around 8,000 comments.

Especially over the last five years, the tone of users has become more aggressive and negative, Meteoschweiz wrote. The comment function was increasingly used to spread conspiracy theories, intolerance and hatred. In addition, it often becomes personal, “including open insults towards employees of Meteoschweiz or the federal government in general”.

Before 2020, the blog discussions were used even more constructively. For example, to exchange ideas about specific topics.

Meteoschweiz also cited savings reasons for which the support-intensive comment function in the Meteoschweiz blog would be removed. Like all federal offices, Meteo-Switzerland is also affected by cross-sectional cuts and must implement the federal government’s savings requirements.

Since 2014, it has been possible to leave comments on Meteoschweiz blog articles in German, French and Italian. Meteoschweiz will remove this function for all three languages from November 30th. Meteoschweiz wants to remain accessible to its readers via the channels on X, Instagram and Linkedin.
