Inter and Juventus full-backs Federico Dimarco and Andrea Cambiaso combined to get Italy back into things in their Nations League decider against France, around 90 seconds after the Azzurri had fallen 2-0 behind at San Siro.
Dimarco and Cambiaso combine to rescue Italy
Dimarco supplied the cross from the left byline, which was slightly too quick for Mateo Retegui to head home, but it fell kindly for Cambiaso to slam past Mike Maignan instead.
Both Italy and France have already qualified for the Nations League quarter-finals, but Sunday night’s match will determine who finishes first and who finishes second.
Italy will finish the night as group winners with a win, draw and with a one-goal defeat, which is why Cambiaso’s goal was so crucial given that it looked like the game was just starting to slip away from the Azzurri a few moments before.
Finishing at the top of the Nations League group also provides Luciano Spalletti with a back-up route should qualification for the 2026 World Cup not go to plan.
