At 26, the Spanish rider from the Ducati Pramac team was crowned MotoGP world champion for the first time this Sunday in Barcelona, at the end of a suspenseful season where he was very consistent.
The 2024 world title held out his arms to him, and Jorge Martin did not miss the moment to go for it! The Spaniard, who was 24 points ahead of his rival and double title holder Francesco Bagnaia before arriving in Barcelona (which replaced at short notice the Valencia circuit, devastated by floods) for the last Grand Prix of the season, and 19 at the end of the sprint race, won by the Italian on Saturday, did not give in to the pressure. A place in the Top 9 on Sunday was enough for him to become world champion, even if Bagnaia wins. He finished third, and the Italian's success on the Catalan circuit will therefore remain anecdotal. The Ducati rider knew he needed a miracle to achieve the hat-trick, it didn't happen.
Martin will leave Ducati Pramac for Aprilia
Starting from pole with a soft rear tire (while Martin had chosen a medium), he led the race from start to finish, and behind, Jorge Martin, second after the start after getting the better of Marc Marquez, did not didn't take the slightest risk. Marquez overtook his compatriot on the second lap, and the Top 3 remained unchanged until the end. Jorge Martin, 26 years old, reigning world vice-champion, wins the Holy Grail, ten points ahead of his rival, at the end of a season in which he has been ultra-regular, with sixteen Grand Prix podiums, including three victories (Portugal, France, Indonesia). Ironically, he was crowned during his last GP with Ducati Pramac, whose colors he has worn since his arrival in MotoGP in 2021. Next season, he will in fact be riding an Aprilia, at the alongside Marco Bezzecchi (12th in the world), Ducati having chosen Marc Marquez to team up with Bagnaia. Given the domination of the Ducati for several seasons, it is difficult to think that Martin can achieve the double, but he will have time to think about it in the coming weeks. The “Martinator” is the 2024 champion and he intends to take advantage of it!
Ogura and Alonso also titled
On the French side, Fabio Quartararo and Johann Zarco concluded the season by ranking 11th and 14th respectively. The two tricolors will not have weighed on this year 2024, the Niçois, still in difficulty with his Yamaha, having had for best result a sixth place in Malaysia, and the Cannes, who had difficulty for his debut with Honda, a eighth place in Thailand. However, they finished ahead of their respective teammates in the world rankings (Quartararo 13th and Zarco 17th). In Moto2, the world title went to the 23-year-old Japanese Ai Oguradriver of the Boscoscuro team and winner of three Grands Prix this season. We will find him in MotoGP next year, on an Aprilia, within the Trackhouse Racing team with Raul Fernandez (16th in the world). In Moto3, it's the Colombian born in Madrid 18 years ago David Alonso who was crowned, after a season that he dominated head and shoulders, with fourteen victories (including the last seven GP!) and almost 200 points ahead of the competition. He will move up to Moto2 in 2025.
