Apocalypse Verdun: look back at a historic battle

On the occasion of the commemorations of the First World War, 5 rebroadcasts Apocalypse.

French shells transported to Verdun.

Last June, ahead of the broadcast of the last two unpublished episodes on the 1944 landings of their famous saga, the director couple formed by Isabelle Clarke and Daniel Costelle confided their desire to devote a next issue to the atomic bomb.

But it was a few days before France Télévisions announced the “probable” end of the historic series. Which, in fifteen years, revolutionized French documentary (war, especially). Our designers were even pioneers in terms of recolored images – before the advent of artificial intelligence, which works miracles in this area – a technology used because their daughter hated… black and white!

At the same time, the duo benefited from the best teams of historians, enabling them to unearth (almost) previously unpublished images. “And also because we quickly created a well-known and appreciated brand. We were able to get to the bottom of the research. Without forgetting Isabelle's production talents”, specified Daniel Costelle. Isabelle Clarke recalling the importance of the voice of Mathieu Kassovitz, the narrator of the eleven series Apocalypse. “He is the beating heart of the whole thing, with the added bonus of this ability to put himself in the shoes of historical characters. When he performs one, we believe it!

Certainly, the actor does not play in this number designed for the hundred years of the bloodiest offensive of the 14-18 war. But, as always, he takes us through an exciting, dense and moving hour and a half. Because it is difficult, even when (re)watching this film, and knowing that almost all of us have experienced times of peace, to remain insensitive to the horrors that these millions of men have experienced. In the name of intra-European issues in this case, which, even today, are beyond us.

Broadcast on November 17 at 9:05 p.m. on France 5
