The “made in Italy” steamroller has struck again. Despite real resistance Taylor Fritz lost in two sets against Jannik Sinner (4−6, 4–6). The world number 1 therefore ends a perfect week where he confirmed that he had become the leader of world tennis in 2024.
Taylor has no regrets, he faced a Sinner in full confidence, powerful, and often intractable in heated moments. On certain sequences, it is even almost inhuman what Jannik offers, particularly when he decides to accelerate the pace whether on the backhand, as on the forehand, and also on the serve (Editor's note: 14 aces during this final)
During each set, he took the game into his own hands by breaking in the middle of the set to give himself some air and manage this final. Well pushed by his audience who remained very respectful, Sinner never left his bubble conceding only a small break point in the entire match.
In the end, this duel resembled the group match with Taylor still making progress but not enough to get into the head of his opponent a little.
For Sinner, the season is not over.
Jannik will be in Malaga next week with his friends to sign a Davis Cup double after success in 2023. If he plays at this level, he could almost single-handedly achieve this feat.
