Antonello Venditti on Domenica In, between bullying, depression and love for Roma

52 years of career, over 45 albums published, almost 40 million copies sold and so much more to tell. Antonello Vendittiborn in 1949, has been on the crest of the wave for more than half a century and now, after having concluded yet another successful tour, he is ready to stop for a moment and reveal some unpublished sides of his private life thanks to the photographic book Out of focusin bookstores from November 19th, in which for the first time he retraces his life as a man and an artist, from the lonely years of adolescence to his musical training and great success.

On the occasion of the release of Out of focusthe Roman singer-songwriter was a guest of Mara Venier a Sunday In for a long interview in which the 76-year-old expressed himself without filters, starting with his relationship with his parents, Vincenzo Italo Venditti and Wanda Sicardi.

Difficult years, those of adolescence: “I have known about bullying since I was born, the strange thing is that it came from my mother… Maybe I didn’t understand it, I’m probably understanding it now; what children lack is irony, they are victims of the static nature of words. She once said a word to my father, with a smile on her lips: ‘This little boy is an idiot’. But when you hear it as a child, at six years old, it’s not nice,” he said Venditti in the Sunday lounge of Rai 1.

“My father also gave me some funny punishments, but for me they weren’t funny: he put me in front of the kitchen door and told me to stare at it. These are things you can’t get over… All this, however, strengthened me”, continued Antonello. Also thanks to his love for music, Venditti is managed to find his wayignoring his parents’ wishes: “Francesco De Gregori was my brother. Roma Capoccia I remember when I wrote it. I always write songs in front of a wall, to break it. Even if my parents wanted me to do something else”.

During the long and touching interview, the author of Thanks Rome, Night before exams e We need a friend he also spoke about the difficult period he has fought against depression: “I suffered from depression, I wanted to end it. I wanted to kill myself, I wanted to do it with the car but I’ve always been too good at driving to do it. I had an ache for living inside.”

From that dark period, however, the singer-songwriter managed to emerge thanks to the help of Lucio Dalla and thanks to the support for his beloved Roma: “Lucio Dalla saved me. In 1970 he noticed how I was, he understood that I had to leave Rome. There he took care of me. But the evil idea of ​​ending it was not in my mind. Do you know how it went for me? With the love I received. I healed at the Circus Maximus when Roma won the scudetto. I had the exact feeling that there was no dystonia with others. Lucio understood it and took me back to Rome.”
