In the 73rd year, a Danish woman has brought the title of Miss Universe to her country for the first time. This year there are no age limits for the competition. In the end, 21-year-old Victoria Kjaer Theilvig prevailed against the competition.
21-year-old Victoria Kjaer Theilvig from Denmark is the new Miss Universe. At the 73rd edition of the beauty pageant in Mexico City, the former professional dancer and animal rights activist beat 126 competitors. It is the first victory by a Danish participant in the history of the competition.
In an emotional finale, Theilvig was crowned by her predecessor Sheynnis Palacios from Nicaragua. The Dane, who works in the diamond trade, beat Miss Nigeria in the final sprint, while Miss Mexico took third place. “I’m standing here today because I want to make history and bring about change,” said the visibly emotional winner in her victory speech.
The competition, which has been held since 1952, set a special example for more inclusion this year. For the first time there was no longer an age limit – the oldest participant was the 40-year-old Miss Malta and mother of three, Beatrice Njoya. Married women and mothers were admitted for the first time last year. With Cuba, a nation returned to the competition for the first time after a 57-year break. Belarus, Eritrea and the Maldives also celebrated their premieres. Germany was represented by 26-year-old Pia Theissen from Cologne.
“I live every day as I am”
The decision was made after several rounds. After an initial pre-selection of the top 30 based on the preliminary rounds on Thursday, which also included a spectacular national costume competition, a swimwear show followed.
The remaining twelve participants then presented themselves in elegant evening gowns. In the final question round, the final five candidates had to demonstrate their quick wit and skill in dealing with complex issues such as leadership and resilience.
When asked how she would live if no one judged her, Theilvig confidently replied: “I wouldn’t change anything – I live every day as I am.” The show was hosted by “Saved by the Bell” star Mario Lopez and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, while singer Robin Thicke and Black Eyed Peas singer Taboo provided the musical entertainment.
