British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday he would defend decisions made in his new Labor government's first budget “all day long”, as farmers protested against changes to the inheritance tax.
Addressing the Welsh Labor Party conference in Llandudno, north Wales, Mr Starmer did not directly refer to farmers' complaints but said he would stick to decisions made in Finance Minister Rachel Reeves' October 30 budget statement.
“Make no mistake, I will defend our budget decisions all day long,” he said.
“I will defend the tough decisions that were necessary to stabilize our economy.”
As Mr Starmer spoke, hundreds of farmers demonstrated outside the conference venue to protest against a Budget measure which will force more of them to pay inheritance tax.
They warned the move would threaten the viability of farms, make produce more expensive and jeopardize food security.
Farmers are planning a major protest in London on November 19.
British businesses also warned that the budget's increases in employment taxes and the minimum wage would fuel inflation and have a negative impact on investment and jobs.
