Tottenham will get a deal for Johnny Cardoso over the line amid transfer interest from rival clubs, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcastsenior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Daniel Levy has worked closely with Real Betis to ensure Spurs get the best result possible from their deal.
This comes after Football Insider reported that Spurs secured a priority option to sign the 23-year-old for a fee of £21million in their deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso.
On top of that, should they decide against triggering the release clause, the club will take a percentage of any future sale elsewhere.
As things stand, the possibility of Cardoso joining the club on a permanent deal remains up in the air as they weigh up whether to trigger his release clause in January.
However, Aston Villa are among sides to have shown interest in the USA international, which sources say could force Tottenham’s hand to get the deal done.
They are keen to prevent a deal which would strengthen a divisional rival in their race for Champions League qualification via finishing in the top four.
Tottenham to swoop for Johnny Cardoso amid Aston Villa twist
Cardoso is very highly regarded at Tottenham and also at Real Betis, where he has established himself as a key player in their midfield.
The American has made 15 appearances for the Spanish outfit across all competitions this season and has established himself as a regular feature in their starting XI.
During his run in the side, he has turned in a number of impressive displays including a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 win against Real Betis.
On top of his recent displays in La Liga, his 17 senior caps for the USMNT has made him a valuable commodity and attracted interest from clubs across Europe.
However, the agreement thrashed out between Levy and Betis means Tottenham still hold the cards over his future despite growing interest elsewhere.
Aston Villa are among the clubs to have identified Cardoso as a potential option ahead of the January transfer window, but sources say Spurs will step in to land the deal themselves if Villa make a move.
