Self-criticism of Juan Fernando Quintero after Colombia’s defeat against Uruguay

Juan Fernando Quintero has spoken candidly after Colombia’s painful defeat against Uruguay.

The Colombian national team suffered a disappointing loss on Friday (November 15) during the 11th day of the South American qualifiers. Quintero was one of the first to comment on the unsatisfactory result at Montevideo’s El Centenario stadium, offering direct self-criticism of the team’s defensive line.

Quintero opened the scoring with a free kick for Colombia in the 31st minute. Uruguay equalized with a Dávinson Sánchez own goal in the 57th minute and took the lead through Rodrigo Aguirre in the 60th minute, the América de Mexico player who made his national team debut in this match.

As the Centenario celebrated what appeared to be a victory, Andrés Gómez equalized for Colombia in the sixth minute of added time. However, Charrúa’s tenacity was felt when Manuel Ugarte sealed the victory with a collective action goal in the 90+11 minute, sparking euphoria in Montevideo.

Speaking to Noticias RCN, the Racing midfielder highlighted the need to learn from such situations and the failure to control the match with only one action remaining.

“It’s difficult; at the moment, with a clear head, we can analyze what happened. It was very difficult after we equalized, and on the next play we conceded a goal. These matches teach us surely to have a cooler head when it comes to defending and clearing the ball if necessary,” he said.

“It’s very hard to talk about it at the moment, and we will watch the video of the match again to draw conclusions,” added the Antiochian footballer.

With this victory, Uruguay returns to second place in the standings with 19 points, the same total as Colombia, who have an inferior goal difference, ranking three points behind leaders Argentina.
