13,000 heads on their way to Morocco

Last week, a Moroccan delegation visited Romania, with the aim of resuming sheep imports, after a temporary suspension, due to a virus detected by Romanian veterinary authorities.

The delegation was led by the Moroccan ambassador to Romania, Hassan Abouyoub, the director of animal and plant heritage protection of ONSSA, Dr. El Abrak Abderrahman and an unidentified Moroccan company interested in the importation of sheep from Romania.

This visit resulted in the importation of 13,000 heads of sheep from a sheep collection center in Constanța in Romania.

This is the first shipment to this destination after the confirmation of the first outbreak of PPR in Romania in July 2024.

“Last week, Romania resumed exports of live sheep to Morocco, one of the main markets for Romanian breeders,” said Cristian Laurențiu Mortasivu, director general of the General Directorate of Health and Welfare. animal within the ANSVS, the equivalent of the ONSSA in Morocco.

According to the National Institute of Statistics of Romania (INS), Morocco is, according to 2023 data, the 10th market for Romanian sheep, with deliveries of 15,470 sheep in 2023, representing 0.6% of total exports of 2.3 million head.
