In a candid conversation on Prime Take with Muftawu Nabila Abdulai, Michail Antonio, the West Ham United and Jamaica striker, expressed his profound disappointment over the potential of Ghana not qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Antonio, who was taken aback upon realizing that Ghana, a nation synonymous with AFCON since 2006, might miss the upcoming tournament in Morocco, stated, “Ghana hasn’t qualified for the AFCON?” revealing his shock at the prospect.
He reflected on the Black Stars’ recent struggle, remarking, “They’ve certainly lost a bit of momentum. It’s very disappointing, but to be fair, Ghana is undergoing a transition phase right now. Fresh talent is stepping in as they work to reclaim the illustrious philosophy and quality that once defined Ghana football… although to be honest, they still possess some quality today.”

Antonio didn’t hold back in praising former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, highlighting their time together at West Ham. “I played with Andre Ayew, a top-quality player. Technically, he’s unbelievable and always had an eye for goal. He’s now known as the Prince of Ghana, isn’t he?” he shared enthusiastically.
When informed of Ayew’s sporadic call-ups to the national team, Antonio expressed understanding. He noted that football is a constantly evolving landscape that tends to lean towards younger talent. “He’s getting a bit older now, and that’s the usual pattern in football. Teams continuously look for fresh players to invigorate the squad. It’s what happens to all footballers over time; you bring in the younger generation while the older players phase out.”
Drawing parallels to his own experience at West Ham, Antonio admitted, “Every year, the club considers bringing in younger players to take over my role, but here I am, still standing strong. It’s part of the game; as you age, teams look for something new and fresh. You might not be as quick or nimble as you once were, so it’s only natural.”
