Morocco lagging behind in English

At the national level, it is Casablanca-Settat which takes the lead in the regional ranking, dethroning Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, relegated to second place. Marrakech-Safi completes the podium. At the back of the pack, Guelmim-Oued Noun and Drâa-Tafilalet bring up the rear.

Rabat remains the city where English is spoken best, closely followed by El Jadida. Casablanca climbs in the ranking and overtakes Oujda, now seventh. Béni Mellal and Khouribga occupy the last places.

On an African scale, South Africa dominates the ranking, rising to 11th place in the world. Morocco comes in ninth position, behind Tunisia and Tanzania. Ivory Coast, Somalia and Libya have the lowest levels of control.

“Education First” indicates that English comprehension has generally improved over the past thirty years, although fluency remains a challenge for many. The report highlights the progress of women, particularly in Africa, and points out the lower level of the public sector compared to the private sector.

Finally, the report calls for better teacher training and the systematic integration of English into university courses.
