He is the “oldest political prisoner”. It will probably no longer be very quickly if the decision of the French courts is confirmed. This Friday, November 15, 2024, the release of Georges Ibrahim Abdallaha Lebanese revolutionary activist imprisoned since 1987, was ordained.
The national anti-terrorism prosecution still decided to appeal.
Imprisoned in the Hautes-Pyrénées
Sentenced to life imprisonment for complicity in the assassination of two Israeli and American diplomats in Paris in 1982, the Lebanese man is detained at the Lannemezan Penitentiary Center (Hautes-Pyrénées) – one of the most secure prisons in France – for 37 years.
He is also suspected of having played a role in the 1976 assassination of Francis MeloyUnited States Ambassador to Lebanon. Georges Ibrahim Abdallah was also an accomplice in the attempted assassination of United States Consul General Robert Homme in 1984 in Strasbourg.
By decision dated today, the sentence enforcement court admitted Georges Ibrahim Abdallah to the benefit of conditional release from December 6, subject to the condition of leaving the national territory and no longer appearing there.
A release requested for 25 years
From now on aged 73the Lebanese has been the subject of ten requests for parole since 1999, when he became releasable. “Twice, when the sentence enforcement court had decided the release of Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, the embassies of the United States and Israel intervened to influence the course of justice in our country, and obtain that “he is not released and sent back to Lebanon”, explained the Federation of the Communist Party of Hautes-Pyrénées.
