What would relegation in the Nations League mean?

On Friday, the Swiss national football team will play against Serbia in Zurich’s Letzigrund at 8:45 p.m. and thus against direct relegation for the first time. Murat Yakin’s team got one point in the first four games of the Nations League, in mid-October in St. Gallen 2:2 against Denmark. There are still two rounds left and Switzerland is three points behind Serbia in last place in their group of four.
In the Nations League, if the number of points is the same, the direct encounter counts. That’s why Switzerland has to win against Serbia. Otherwise, they will be relegated to League B before the last group game.

The Nations League has existed since the 2018/19 season and is currently in its fourth edition. So far, Switzerland has always played in League A, and in 2019 they even played for the title in the Final Four tournament.
Five years later, national coach Yakin says: “Relegation wouldn’t be a drama.” But relegation would be a first. And it had an impact for years to come. In League B, the best opponents would no longer be Spain, Germany or Belgium, but rather top-class nations like the Czech Republic, Norway or Wales; In addition, Switzerland could lose its place in Pot 1 for qualification for the 2026 World Cup. However, that also depends on the results of other nations.
Even if Switzerland wins against Serbia on Friday, staying in the league is not certain. It then comes down to the last matchday: the game against Spain, which will be played on Monday evening (8:45 p.m.) on the Canary Islands of Tenerife.
