Mauritania remains alive

Having gotten off to a bad start in the CAN 2025 qualifiers, Mauritania stayed alive by bringing home a point from its trip to Botswana (1-1) this Friday on the penultimate day of qualifying.

Aboubakary Koïta had however stunned Francistown by opening the scoring in the 7th minute with a free kick as sumptuous as it was powerful. But Gilbert Baruti quickly equalized for the locals by taking advantage of a ball that was lying around in the opposing area (17th). At the half-hour mark, Pape Ibnou Ba then wasted a huge 2-1 ball for the Mourabitounes at close range.

Cape Verde in danger

Amir Abdou’s men will have to be content with this point which leaves them 3 lengths behind their opponent, 2nd. Provisionally 3rd, the Mauritania will play its destiny on Tuesday in Nouakchott against the Cap-Vert, which hosts Egypt at the end of the day and which will be eliminated if it does not win.

To qualify, Mauritania will need to beat the Blue Sharks while counting on a defeat of Botswana against Egypt.
