(Benin will play for qualification in Tripoli) The Squirrels of Benin will have to wait a few more days to validate their ticket for the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025. Benin is forced to face Libya in a final match to confirm their presence on Moroccan soil.
The final qualification ticket from Group D of the CAN Morocco 2025 qualifiers will be decided on Monday, November 18, 2024. In a favorable position to secure their ticket for a fifth qualification in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, the team led by Steve Mounier could not capitalize on this opportunity against the Super Eagles of Nigeria. A victory over Nigeria would have qualified Benin for the continental football festival. Indeed, Libya’s victory (1-0) away against Rwanda put Benin in a strong position for qualification before the last matchday.
Against Nigeria, the Squirrels could only manage a draw. However, the Beninese side started the match in brilliant form. Mohamed Tidjani’s fierce header in the 12th minute put Benin ahead on the scoreboard. This advantage was maintained until the 80th minute when Super Eagles’ striker Victor Osimhen equalized to bring both teams level at (1-1). The score remained unchanged until the final whistle. With this result, Benin maintains its position in the standings (2nd) after the 5th matchday. Everything will now be decided in Tripoli where any result other than a defeat would qualify Benin for CAN Morocco 2025.
