LArgentina lost 2-1 to Paraguay on Thursday for the 11th day of South American qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. At the same time, Brazil was held on to Venezuela (1-1).
The world champions opened the scoring via Lautaro Martinez (11th, 0-1) but the Paraguayans quickly equalized, in superb fashion, on a “bicycle” from Tony Sanabria (19th, 1-1). Omar Alderete then scored the winning goal at the start of the second half from a free kick (47th, 2-1).
Despite this third defeat in these qualifications, Argentina remains at the top of the standings with 22 points, three more than Colombia, which faces Uruguay on Friday, and five more than Brazil, hanging on to Venezuela. Raphinha had put the Seleçao in control (43rd, 0-1) but Telasco Segovia equalized just after returning from the locker room (46th, 1-1). Vinicius then had the opportunity to restore Brazil’s lead but his penalty was saved by Rafael Romo (62nd).
In the other meeting of the day, Ecuador made short work of Bolivia (4-0).
The South American qualifiers take place in the format of a mini-championship with home-and-away matches. The top six in the ranking qualify for the World Cup while the seventh ranked will play an intercontinental play-off.
