Jon Jones has walked out one of his pre-fight interviews ahead of UFC 309.
‘Bones’ will defend his heavyweight belt against Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden in New York on Saturday night.
On Wednesday, he attended UFC 309 where he fielding questions from a bunch of reporters before sitting down for exlcusive one-to-one interviews with the UFC’s broadcast partners.
The UFC’s UK broadcaster sent veteran combat sports reporter Adam Catterall to chat with Jon Jones, but the American MMA legend took one look at him and headed for the exit door.
Jon Jones accuses reporter of being too ‘close’ to Tom Aspinall
Jones has been telling anyone who will listen that he will not fight Tom Aspinall after UFC 309.
The interim heavyweight champion is waiting in the wings for the winner of Jones vs Miocic.
Unforunately, the current king of the division would prefer to fight Alex Pereira for the BMF belt next.
Catterall and Aspinall co-host a show together on TNT Sports. And because of that Jones is convinced that the two men have a ‘close’ relationship that would’ve put him on the backfoot in the interview he refused to take part in.
“I’m not going to do this interview because it’s going to be an Aspinall-fest. I’m not going to do it,” Jones said while making a swift exit.
The two men bumped into each other soon after and Jones went over to break the ice.
He said: “Hey bro, nothing personal. I see how close you guys are. Common sense tells me what type of questions I’m going to get aksed.”
Catterall reponsded: “You’re entitled to speak to whoever you want to speak to.”
Jon Jones doesn’t want to do business with Tom Aspinall
Aspinall initalliy approached a potential fight with Jones in a respectful manner, but his tone changed when the consensus greatest MMA fighter of all time began publicly belittling his accomplisments.
Lately, ‘The Honey Badger’ has attempted to goad Jones into a fight with him. Neither tactic appears to have worked and now the heavyweight champion is insisting that he’ll never do business with Aspinall.
“I get that Tom is an exciting fighter, I get that finally after 16 years we found somebody who is seven years younger than me and 30lb bigger than me,” Jones said.
“We finally found someone who may give me a great challenge and everyone wants to see it so bad. For me, what’s in it for me? He changes nothing if I beat him.
“Beating Tom is just like beating Ciryl Gane [against whom he won the belt at UFC 285 in March of last year]. He has a whole country behind him, he’s hot right now, but what happens to me after I beat him? Nothing changes for me.”
“If I’m being completely honest, I feel like Tom’s been such an a****** that I don’t want to do business with him,” Jones continued. “His fans have been so annoying and obviously you don’t get this far in a career being affected by fans or what not, but he’s just an a******.
“He’s 30 so he’s from this influencer generation where you hop online with the t-shirt sales and all that. I’m past that type of stuff. I’m like bro if you had a little bit more respect then maybe we could have something out.
“I just don’t even want to do business with him – at the end of the day, this is a business. Fighting me gives him the opportunity to change his life forever. I don’t even want to give him the opportunity.
“He just played his cards wrong with me personally. I’m three years from being a 40-year-old grown man. The press conference, going through the whole shebang with him, I’d rather not do.”
