Jannik Sinner has won 25 of his last 26 matches on the circuit. A war machine. Victory in Cincinnati, victory at the US Open, final in Beijing (defeated by Alcaraz), victory in Shanghai, victory with full points in the round robin here in Turin. The trio at the Finals was achieved without losing a single set. When the match with Medvedev ends, the world number 1 finally breaks into a beautiful smile and, cheered by the crowd at the Inalpi Arena, claps his hand on his chest. “The smile is there,” he says. And addressing the fans: “The atmosphere is always beautiful, thank you so much for coming here. It really means a lot to me.”

Then he analyzes the match against the Russian: “I tried to play tactically in the right way, I succeeded. It was a great match, I managed to play well in the important points this time too. The first objective, reaching the semi-final, has been achieved, we are happy. Let’s see how it goes on Saturday.” Finally, an excursus on the group just concluded: “The first outing with De Minaur was very difficult because I hadn’t played for several days and I had had a virus. The second against Fritz was very important because it put me in a great position to qualify. I hope tonight’s match will give me confidence for the semi-final. We hope to raise the level, but I’m already happy with how I’m playing.”

The best words for Sinner come from his last opponent: “I watched his training before the match. He hardly misses a shot and hits hard. Often many players who don’t miss much, at least don’t hit hard. He can hit hard, very strong, he’s probably one of the 3-4-5 best hitters on tour, and he doesn’t make mistakes. It’s difficult to play against him.” In 2021, here in Turin, after winning the first set 6-0, he yawned in Sinner’s face at the change of court. Now Medvedev crowns the world number 1: “He is perhaps one of the best players I have faced in my career. I faced the big 4 (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, ed.) when they were a little older, and maybe the speed wasn’t the same.”
