Nations League: Italy wins, only draws

Sandro Tonali put Italy in front in the 11th minute, Giovanni Di Lorenzo had played from the right to the middle, the Belgian defense looked anything but good. All Tonali had to do was push the ball in all by herself.

Belgium had no reaction in the first half, but that changed in the second 45 minutes. But goalie Gigi Donnarumma was usually there. The post had to save him once. But the Azzurri also missed their chances. Neither team wanted to score another goal, Italy celebrated their fourth win in their fifth game.

Despite the high security precautions, riots broke out at the Stade de in during the high-risk game between France and Israel. According to media reports, around 50 people were involved in the clashes in the north curve during the first half of the Nations League game. The security forces and police quickly intervened and separated the two groups. The incident lasted a good two minutes.

Things remained quiet in Paris until kick-off. A massive police presence had been securing the stadium since the afternoon.

According to Paris police chief Laurent Nuñez, the game was considered a high-risk game. 4,000 police officers were deployed for the encounter. They worked in and around the stadium and also in local transport. An additional 1,600 security guards were deployed at the venue.

Many seats in the stadium remained empty; around 20,000 fans were estimated to be watching the game. Among them were some Israeli supporters, despite a warning from Israel’s National Security Council. French head of state Emmanuel Macron and former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande also watched the game in the stands.

was also played, but the favored hosts had a very difficult time and the game ended 0-0.

There had been concerns about security in light of the targeted attacks on Israeli football fans in Amsterdam last Thursday. Israel’s National Security Council generally called on citizens to exercise caution at events abroad. They should avoid sporting and cultural events outside Israel in which Israeli teams or artists take part, as the Haaretz newspaper reported, citing the Security Council.

The Three Lions made it 1-0 even earlier than Italy; in Athens, Ollie Watkins scored in the 7th minute. An own goal from Odysseas Vlachodimos sealed the home defeat (78th), Curtis Jones increased the score to 3-0 (83rd).

The new England coach Thomas Tuchel wasn’t there yet and he won’t be pulling the strings until January. Why is the 51-year-old starting so late? «It was important for me to narrow down the project and not lose focus. I wanted to have a clear start,” he said. What he meant: His focus should be on the World Cup and initially on qualifying for it. The salvation of an entire nation by winning the second World Cup title is his “project”. His first games are scheduled to be two World Cup qualifiers in March.
