When measured over a relatively short period of time, radio station audiences are likely to show significant variation. The 2024 school year, with its measurement established by Médiamétrie for September-October and revealed Thursday November 14, is no exception to the rule. Two performances particularly illustrate this: France Inter once again soars to the highest level, and Europe 1 is indisputably coming back from the devil.
Even if it is not new, a third trend is also obvious: with 37,846,000 daily listeners, the radio medium continues to let the faithful slip away – 295,000 compared to the start of the 2023 school year, and 366,000 compared to the April-June period. Its cumulative audience (AC) now stands at 67.5%, compared to 68.6% a year ago (-1.1 points). But the entire sector is not in the same boat. If the music stations are struggling (except Nostalgie, + 0.6 points to 6.6%), those of Radio France are all celebrating.
By attracting almost 7.2 million listeners every day, or 265,000 more than in 2023 at the same time, France Inter has never been so listened to. At 12.8%, it reached an unprecedented cumulative audience level for a return to school (+0.3 points versus 2023), to which is added a stratospheric audience share of 15.1% (thanks to a duration of listen in progression of eleven minutes). For the first time, the morning show, broadcast between 7 and 10 a.m., exceeds 5 million daily listeners (+244,000 listeners in one year). But Adèle Van Reeth, the station director, sees “you host” everywhere: from morning to evening, all shows expand their audience.
At Europe 1, Constance Benqué, the president of Lagardère News, makes exactly the same observation. “From Dimitri Pavlenko’s morning show to Olivier Delacroix’s “La Libre antenne”, everything is in the green”she sums up in turn. With a cumulative audience of 4.4% (+ 0.6 points in one year, the strongest growth on the market), Europe 1 brings together 2,486,000 listeners daily (+ 347,000 in one year) who, in addition, remain connected for eleven more minutes every day.

Did the arrival of Pascal Praud, at the start of the 2023 school year, allow radio to regain an upward dynamic? That of Cyril Hanouna, every day between 4 and 6 p.m., acts as a second elevator: his show “On marche sur le tête” “doubles the cumulative audience and increases market share by a third”. Mme Benqué sees in these results an encouragement to continue on the path of “stability, but also that of the audacity to free oneself from political correctness”.
