Five years in prison and a sentence of ineligibility were requested against Marine Le Pen this Wednesday. The leader of the National Rally deputies proclaimed “her innocence” during this trial.
It is an indictment which was eagerly awaited and whose political consequences could be serious. The Paris prosecutor's office requested this Wednesday, November 13, five years in prison and a sentence of ineligibility against Marine Le Pen. The three-time candidate for the presidential election is accused of having embezzled funds from the European Parliament for the benefit of her party, the National Front at the material time. The MP denounced the “violence of the requisitions” against her and her party.
A few moments later, several far-right elected officials gave their support to the leader of the National Rally deputies, particularly on social networks through #JeSoutiensMarine.
“An attack on democracy”
The president of the RN Jordan Bardella wrote that “the prosecution is not in justice: it is in relentlessness and revenge against Marine Le Pen”, estimating that the indictment of the Paris Prosecutor's Office is “a attack on democracy.
Several MPs have published photos of themselves with Marine Le Pen at their side, like party spokesperson Laure Lavalette, Sébastien Chenu and Somme MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy.
For his part, the president of Reconquête Éric Zemmour declared that “it is surely not up to justice to decide who can be a candidate in the presidential election.”
After the closing arguments, the trial will resume next Monday, with defense arguments scheduled for two weeks.
